Badminton in the UAE gains momentum

Emirati on world body's unit

DUBAI 30 August 2017: The UAE has now its first ever representation in the Badminton Asia, the governing body of the badminton sport in Asia under the flagship of Badminton World Federation.

Ghazi Sabeel Al Madani has been named the Deputy Chairman of the Finance Committee at the continental body, said Wam.

The designation comes in recognition of the efforts made by Al Madani, who is the Manager of Sports Tourism at Dubai Sports Council, and Chairman of the Badminton Committee, to promote the sports across the country. Al Madani’s term will run from 2017 through 2019.

It’s noteworthy that major events in both international table tennis and badminton have been held in Dubai over the recent years as the emirate looks to further promote itself to Asian markets, where the sports is predominantly played.

The growth trajectory of badminton over the past two years has been nothing short of remarkable since the Shuttle Time Dubai programme was introduced as part of the agreement to host the BWF World Superseries Finals in Dubai.

Badminton Asia is currently represented by 43 member associations from 5 sub-regions all across Asia. The 5 sub-regions recognised under the Badminton Asia Strategic Plan 2013 – 2016 are: East Asia, South East Asia, West Asia, Central Asia and South Asia.

As the governing body, Badminton Asia focuses on promoting, managing and developing the sport in Asia in principles of specificity and universality.
