Dubai breaks yet another Guinness World Record

DUBAI 5 August 2018: Over 100 UAE residents broke the Guinness World Record for the most seeds planted simultaneously by potting 20,000 Ghaf seeds in one hour on Thursday.

The Procter & Gamble (P&G) event was held at Jebel Ali Golf Resort in Dubai. In partnership with Give a Ghaf Tree Planting Programme by social enterprise Goumbook, the world record attempt was part of P&G and Carrefour UAE’s Leave Your Mark campaign that aims to save the UAE’s endangered national tree.

Indigenous to the region, the Ghaf tree has multiple functions in the UAE desert, and is considered by scientists to be a solution to desertification as the tree stabilizes dunes and improves the soil.

Due to urbanization, the tree is on the endangered species list, and by growing thousands of Ghaf trees in the UAE, P&G is trying to preserve the tree and its rich heritage. Consumers were invited to plant the seeds into small pots, which were later replanted in a mosaic to resemble the Year of Zayed logo when viewed aerially.

This collaborative effort was exerted to address the sustainability values in commemoration of the Year of Zayed.

P&G is giving shoppers an easy way to make their ‘green’ contribution through the simple act of purchase – for every P&G product purchased at Carrefour until August 4, 2018, P&G will plant a Ghaf tree on behalf of each consumer.
