Haitham bin Tariq sworn in as new Sultan of Oman

MUSCAT 12 January 2020: The Sultanate of Oman announced the appointment of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimour Al Said as the successor of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who passed away on Friday evening.

The Oman Defence Council in a statement said that it has decided to implement the will of Sultan Qaboos, which was assigned by the Council of the Royal Family.

According to the Oman News Agency and Wam, the Defence Council opened the will and read it out directly to the audience and declared His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimour Al Said as the Sultan of Oman.

Earlier yesterday, the Omani Defence Council issued a statement, calling upon the Royal Family Council to convene in order to determine who shall assume power following the death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said.

The Oman News Agency quoted a statement – issued by the Omani Defence Council – as saying, “In implementation of Article (2-A) of Royal Decree No. 105/96, on the Defence Council, the council has called upon the Royal Family Council to convene in order to determine who shall assume power. The Defence Council will stay convened, vowing to the Almighty Allah to uphold allegiance and loyalty for maintaining this country’s bounty and prosperity.”
