Inaugural Sharjah Senior Golf Masters commences

South African Chris Williams took the lead in opening round

SHARJAH: The inaugural Sharjah Senior Golf Masters (SSGM) commenced yesterday with a host of world-renowned golfers competing for US$425,000 in prize money.

The three-day tournament is being held at the Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club, the first time that a European Tour, Challenge Tour or Senior Tour event is played on a nine-hole golf course. It marks the start of the 2017 European Senior Tour season and is the first senior event in the UAE since 2000.

In the opening round, South African Chris Williams took the lead after firing a seven under par round of 65, said Wam.

The 57 year old carded two eagles and five birdies during his round to take a one shot lead over 2016 Senior Tour Rookie of the Year Magnus Persson Atlevi and debutant Clark Dennis, who earned his card at Senior Tour Qualifying School just last month.

Reigning European Senior Tour Number One Paul Broadhurst is hoping to recreate the form that made him a Senior star when he returns for the defence of his Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club this summer.
