NEW YORK 20 August 2019: The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the horrific 17 August terrorist attack on a wedding ceremony in Kabul, claiming the lives of 63 people and injuring over 180.

In a statement, the UN chief expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and the government and people of Afghanistan. He wished a swift recovery to the injured.

ABU DHABI:  The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned the terrorist attack that targeted the wedding in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC), said in a statement to Wam that it condemns in the “strongest terms” the terrorist attack which took place on Saturday, and that the UAE reaffirms its support to the Afghan government as it confronts the menace of terrorism.

“This cowardly attack claimed by Daesh on a civilian gathering is a solemn reminder of the complex challenges faced by the Afghan government as it works to enter a new phase of stability and security,” the ministry continued.

It added, “Confronting the scourge of terrorism is a shared responsibility among states in pursuit of a more peaceful future, and the UAE stands resolutely with its Afghan partners in this regard.”

Unacceptable Loss of Life

This unacceptable loss of life underlines the importance of multilateral efforts to promote a comprehensive peace agreement that will degrade the ability of transnational terror groups to operate in Afghanistan, the UAE foreign ministry noted.

The UAE extends its sincere condolences to the families of victims and wishes a prompt recovery to those injured in the attack, it concluded.

KABUL: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), has condemned the Kabul attack.

On the evening of 17th August, a suicide attacker detonated explosives in the Shahr-e-Dubai Wedding Hall in West Kabul where approximately 1,000 people were gathered for a Shia wedding ceremony. UNAMA’s human rights team is looking into the incident and working to establish facts.

“An attack deliberately targeting civilians is an outrage, and deeply troubling, as it can only be described as a cowardly act of terror,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan. “I condemn these deliberate attacks on civilians that signal a deliberate intent to spread fear among the population, which has already suffered too much.”

“The pace of such atrocious attacks indicates that current measures in place to protect must be strengthened, and that those who have organised and enabled such attacks must be brought to justice and held to account,” said Yamamoto, who is also head of UNAMA. “The United Nations stands with all Afghans in solidarity and remains committed to an Afghan-led peace process that will end the war and bring about a lasting peace.”

The United Nations extends deep condolences to families who lost loved ones and wishes a quick recovery to those injured.
