Life sentence for Emirati joining terrorist outfit upheld

Federal Appeal Court upholds life sentence

ABU DHABI

The Federal Appeal Court in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday upheld a life sentence for an Emirati, aged 29, who was found guilty of joining a terrorist organisation and travelling abroad with the intention of fighting alongside that organisation.

The Appeal Court also sentenced an Emirati woman to 10 years in jail after she was found guilty of joining the Daesh terrorist group. The court further ordered confiscation of the items seized from her residence.

The Emirati woman posted online a pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, leader of the Daesh terrorist group, in addition to posting articles and information that promote terrorist ideologies.

However, the court acquitted the woman’s sister of all charges.

The Appeal Court also put three young Emiratis in one of the Interior Ministry’s rehabilitation and advice centres. The three are also to be placed on probation and are prohibited from travelling for six months.
