Makkah… 130 years ago

Annual Haj next week

Saudi newspapers on Sunday published pictures of the Western town of Makkah dating back nearly 130 years to mark the annual Haj (pilgrimage) next week.

The pictures, released by a Royal office, show pilgrims inside the Grand Mosque as well as Kaaba, Mount Arafat and other Haj sites.

Newspapers said thousands of Muslims from around the world used to travel for Haj by sea or on camelback, mainly from other Arab countries.

At present, more than two million Muslims converge on Makkah and nearby Madina every year for the Haj, which lasts three days.
