Man killed on Sheikh Zayed Road shoulder in Dubai

DUBAI 24 April 2018: A motorist died after he was run over by a vehicle coming from behind while he was standing on the shoulder of Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai.

Colonel Juma bin Swedan, Director of the Department of Public Administration at Dubai Police, said that the incident occurred in the morning, when the motorist stopped his vehicle on SZR shoulder as one of its tyres had blown.

He had stopped to replace the tyre without fulfilling security and safety procedures. He was run over by a vehicle that was coming from behind a heavy pickup.

The motorist died due to severe injuries.

Colonel Swedan warned about standing on the shoulder of the roads as the specified distance was unsafe to stop oncoming vehicles.

He said in the event of any malfunction, the driver could pull the vehicle off of the road.

He confirmed that standing on the shoulder of the road is a serious violation that results in serious incidents causing deaths and injuries. He indicated that there were almost daily traffic accidents caused by a roadside stoppages.

The shoulder of the road is reserved only for exceptional cases.
