New Fraud: Nirav Modi sold Rs1.22 billion diamonds

By Aliza Noor

DELHI 25 February 2018: The Income Tax Department has found that Nirav Modi’s firms illegally diverted Rs. 1,216 crore worth diamonds intended for exports to the domestic market for huge profits in FY17. The firms which had units at Surat Special Economic Zone (SEZ), allegedly exported low-quality diamonds abroad to keep up appearances.

The department found the companies claimed illegal tax deductions on export profits. CBI has arrested a general manager-rank officer of the PNB posted at the bank’s head office in New Delhi. This fraud also includes his uncle Mehul Choksi, officials said.

Rajesh Jindal, who was the head of the Brady House, Mumbai, branch of the bank during 2009-11, was taken into custody on Tuesday night, they said. It is alleged that the issuance of Letters of Undertaking (LOU) to Nirav Modi group firms without sanctioned limits started during his tenure.

Jindal is presently posted as GM, Credit, PNB Head Office, New Delhi. So, now RBI has constituted an Expert Committee to curb rising incidence of frauds in the banking system.

Was Trudeau snubbed or not?

Guess who visited Delhi? Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did! He is on a week-long visit and was welcomed in Delhi on 17th February as he arrived in India with an aim to boost job opportunities and strengthen the “deep connection between the people of our two countries”.

Officials eagerly waited and Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Gajendra S Shekhawat welcomed Trudeau as he landed in Delhi. Hence, there is a lot of controversy and talks as to why PM Modi did not welcome him, while the officials justified this by saying that theoretically, a Cabinet Minister must always receive.

Most of the Indians seem to think otherwise owing to Narendra Modi’s personal warm welcome to all the other leaders of the countries, such as that of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month, or the hugging diplomacy with Obama and Trump in the past.

Whether this was a snub, or if it was Trudeau’s reception– or lack — to the issue of Sikh separatists, as Canada’s home to many Sikhs and a small but influential number of them support the idea of Khalistan (the demand for a separate state for Indian Sikhs). Hence, there are a lot of speculations about the reasons all over India while Trudeau with his family just visited Taj Mahal in Agra, and met Punjab’s CM Amarinder Singh and is set to visit the Golden Temple, and Gujarat the next week.

AAP legislator Prakash Jarwal was detained on Tuesday night. He was picked up from his house at Deoli and detained. There is a possibility he will be arrested later, sources said. Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash has alleged that he was assaulted by AAP MLAs Amantullah Khan and others during a meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence on Tuesday night.

An FIR was registered by the Delhi Police against Khan and others on the basis of Prakash’s complaint.
