DUBAI 3 October 2018: Following the success of the first edition last November, the Dubai Women’s Triathlon – the first event of its kind in the Middle East organised exclusively for ladies – returns on November 9, promising to build upon the legacy of the first year.

Organised by Women’s Sports Committee of Dubai Sports Council, the triathlon is open to ladies of all nationalities, ages 16 and above. Participants can choose to participate in three categories:

  • Super Sprint (400m swim, 10km cycling and 2.5km run)
  • Sprint (750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run)
  • Olympic Distance (1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run).

Lamia Abdulaziz Khan, head of the event’s Organising Committee and Deputy Chair of the Women’s Sports Committee of Dubai Sports Council, said like last year, all proceeds from registration will go towards charity. This edition’s proceeds will go towards Al Jalila Foundation’s ‘iMcan’ program to equip disabled women with prosthetic limbs to enable them to regain normal movement and pursue a more active lifestyle including sports and fitness activities.

Registration for the Triathlon is open until November 2 on the Dubai Sports Council website, www.dubaisc.ae.

“This second edition of the Dubai Women’s Triathlon is organised by Dubai Sports Council in collaboration with Dubai Ladies Club, as Dubai Ladies Club will host the competition’s activities and organise a family-friendly Triathlon Village that will include numerous health, sports, and leisure activities for women, children, and families observing the competition, creating an atmosphere of happiness and joy for all. Dubai Ladies Club will also organise a comprehensive camp during which participants will train and prepare through workshops, lectures, and an exercise program that will take place until the competition begins.”

No Men Allowed

Lamia Khan also thanked numerous public and private entities for their support, which contributes to the overall success of the Triathlon. She added: “The comfort and privacy of our participants is among our top priorities, especially during the swimming competition. No men will be permitted in the vicinity of the swimming area. The participants will be assured of complete privacy and freedom to compete in an atmosphere that confirms to the customs and traditions in the UAE.”

Registered nurses and emergency medical services will be present onsite, along with showers and changing rooms, and participants will also be able to rent a road bike, along with a helmet, if they do not have their own.

“Organising the second edition of the Middle East’s ladies-only triathlon is a confirmation of the UAE’s efforts to support and encourage the participation of women in sports,” said Fawzia Faridoun, Director of Women’s Sports Development at Dubai Sports Council, who was also present at the press conference along with Dareen Barbar, an amputee and cancer survivor who will be taking part in the Triathlon.

Competitive Thrill

“For women of different ages, nationalities and physical abilities, this is another great opportunity to experience the thrills of competition and to challenge the limits of their physical endurance in complete privacy.”

Faridoun added: “To encourage the participation of the public sector in the Triathlon, we have also included a new award category for participants this year – the government entity with the most members participating in the competition.”
