Sharjah tightens pesticide use after 10-year old Khuzaimah dies

SHARJAH 29 May 2019: Sharjah Municipality has cracked down on use of illegal pesticides after a 10-year old Pakistani boy died of suspected poisoning last Friday and his twin sister was admitted to intensive care. The parents were also treated in hospital.

The funeral for Khuzaimah Khan will take place today.

Apparently, pesticide fumes from a nearby apartment were the cause of Khuzaimah’s death. His twin sister Komal, was to be discharged yesterday from Al Qasimi Hospital..

Sharjah Municipality warned against dealing with pesticides companies who use unlicensed pesticides leading to poisoning or death sometimes. The municipality calls on people to contact them on 993 to inquire about licensed companies or by visiting their website.

Thabit Salem Al Tarifi, Director General of Sharjah City Municipality, affirmed that maintaining health and safety of the residents of the emirate is a priority… by tightening the control on companies that practice the spraying of pesticides in the home.

He said ‘necessary measures’ are being taken against companies that carry out this activity.

Shafiullah Niazi, the father of the twins, said his son started vomiting and complained of dizziness. He was taken to hospital, but later both father and son returned home to find mother and daughter complaining of the same symptoms. Niazi took his wife and daughter to hos[ital and when he returned found his son unconscious. An ambulance took the boy to Al Qasimi Hospital, where he died.

Police investigation found banned aluminium phosphide in pesticide tablets in a neighbour’s flat.

The chemical was banned in 2009 after reports of fatalities and severe cases of poisoning.
