DUBAI 8 August 2018: CNN recently interviewed with Cody Wilson, the creator of the blueprint for 3-D guns – about the implications of these blueprints being available to the public online.

The man behind the 3-D gun told CNN: “I believe in what I’m doing”.

CNN Senior Tech Correspondent Laurie Segall talked to Cody Wilson.

Some excerpts of the interview have been made available to Emirates News 24|7 readers by CNN.

Key Quotes:

On how he feels about the blueprints being available to all:

“I don’t believe that access to information is ever tremendously negative or a bad thing. I know that people can use information for bad things, but this isn’t a justification to what, stop a publisher from speaking? Do public libraries perform background checks on people before they read books? That’s just not how speech and publication work”

On whether the government should take more action to prevent minors and those with mental illnesses from being able to access this information:

“If it’s illegal for you to make a gun in this country [USA], its illegal for you to make a gun, you’re violating the law but that doesn’t mean that that possibility prevents people from being able to legally share and freely access this information, it just doesn’t work that way”

On the US States taking legal action against him:

“I expect they won’t win. We’ve already published the files, so I don’t know how they could get me to stop publishing the files… the ship has sailed, its public domain information now… no one can take it back”

On whether this information should be open to all:

“Is democracy dangerous or not? Can the people be trusted or not? If the question is a moral question like was it right? Should you do it? Again, my answer is yes, I believe in what I’m doing… It may depress them but it excites and inspires me”
