DUBAI 2 March 2020: Dubai Police have rolled out a smart system to monitor pedestrian crossings to ensure the safety of road users.

Dubai Police recently installed a new smart device on pedestrian crossings to detect vehicles that are not committed to giving priority to pedestrians.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said the new smart device would help traffic authorities to ensure the safety of pedestrians crossing from designated areas by curbing motorists who do not give them a priority.

He explained that the device would contribute to raising the level of traffic safety and achieve the strategic goals of maintaining road security and reducing run-over cases at pedestrian crossings.

Brig. Al Mazrouei indicated that the solar-powered device is connected through high-speed internet to the traffic control system and is equipped with sensors through which it can detect the movement of pedestrians crossing on both sides of the road. He indicated that the new device alerts motorists of the necessity of stopping and giving priority to pedestrians through a red light indicator.

Brig. Al Mazrouei pointed out that the force works tirelessly to protect the rights of all road users (drivers, passengers, and pedestrians) to achieve the highest levels of safety, and raise the level of commitment to traffic regulations and laws thus make the emirate’s roads safer.
