New baggage rules on Etihad flights from today

By Eudore R. Chand

ABU DHABI 1 February 2018: As of yesterday, Etihad Airways has introduced a new checked-in baggage policy.

The new global baggage policy is based on the total weight of checked baggage, rather than the numbers of pieces. However, Etihad clarified that USA and Canada baggage policy will continue to be based on number of pieces.

Maximum weight and dimensions
– Maximum dimensions – to/from Canada and the US: 158cm (length + width + height)
– Maximum dimensions – to/from all other destinations: 207cm (length + width + height)
– The weight of each item must not exceed 32kg. Any item in excess of 32kg will not be accepted for carriage.

The above applies to all baggage including pre-purchased excess baggage. Baggage that exceeds the limits and dimensions, such as sporting equipment, will be subject to applicable fees and surcharges.

Hand baggage (carry-on) allowance

Etihad allows a small cabin bag. This bag must fit into the overhead storage within the cabin or below the seat in front in the economy class. The dimensions including any wheels, handles or pockets must not exceed 115cm (50+40+25), equivalent to 45 linear inches. If the bag exceeds the set limits, you will be asked to check your baggage into the hold and additional baggage charges may apply, says the airline.

Personal Items

In addition to cabin baggage, passengers are allowed to carry one personal item. A personal item is typically a small purse, clutch, camera-bag, stuffed toy or food bottles for children, or a blanket.

Your laptop shall be placed either in your carry-on baggage or in your personal item and will account as part of your cabin baggage allowance.
