NRI Alert: India offers $4,000 scholarship for kids

DUBAI 16 June 2019: The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has announced the ‘Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children’ (SPDC), for the academic year 2019-20. The programme is to help the children of NRIs/PIOs in 68 countries pursuing under-graduate courses in several disciplines in India.

Only fresh year students (1st year) in the age group of 17 to 21 years as on 31.10.2019 are eligible to apply for the scholarship. They should also have passed Senior Secondary (10+2) or equivalent examination with minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grades.

SPDC aims at providing financial assistance to the needy children to assist them in pursuing specific professional and non-professional (except medical and related courses) undergraduate courses in Indian universities/institutes, said a statement from the Indian consulate n Dubai.

SPDC program is aimed at four categories

a) Children of Persons of Indian Origin/Overseas Citizens of India

b) Children of Non-Resident Indians

c) Children of Indian workers in ECR countries studying outside India

d) Children of Indian workers in ECR countries studying in India

Under the scheme, Government of India provides partial financial assistance to the extent of 75% of the total Institutional Economic Cost (IEC) subject to a maximum of US$4,000 per annum.

IEC includes tuition fees, hostel fees and other institutional charges (excluding food charges). The total monthly income of the parents of the candidate should not exceed an amount equivalent to $4,000.

Candidates can visit the website http://spdcindia.gov.in for detailed guidelines, online application form, list of institutes and courses. The last date of submission of online application form is 30th November, 2019.
