police activate third phase of surveillance system at interchanges

ABU DHABI 18 June 2017: Abu Dhabi Police have announced the activation of the third phase of a system that books motorists who jump red signals on the interchange as part of a strategic plan to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on the emirate’s roads.

Lt. Colonel Mohammed Al Shehi, Director of Traffic Engineering and Road Safety, Directorate of Traffic and Patrols in Abu Dhabi, said the two previous phases had delivered positive results.

He said that police have installed more cameras on interchanges to catch motorists jumping the red signal.

“From 2013 to 2016, incidents related to jumping red signals dropped by 64 per cent and fatalities and serious injuries by 35 per cent. Violations also went down by 66 per cent over the past three years,” he noted.

The third phase will cover interchanges in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dhafra region. Cameras will book motorists who jump the red signal and cross the speed limit at interchanges, he added.
