Sheikh Zayed Mosque welcomes over 250,000 worshippers

in first week of Ramadan

ABU DHABI 4 June 2017: In a highly spiritual and generous environment, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque welcomed 257,632 worshippers and fasting Muslims during the first week of the holy month of Ramadan under the “Clouds of Giving” programme.

This Ramadan food programme is in response to the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for the “Year of Giving” 2017, said Wam.

“Our Fasting Guests,” an annual project organised by the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center in tribute to the late founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, welcomed 201,260 fasting Muslims.

A taskforce of more than 550 volunteers from 20 public and private bodies are implementing and supervising the Ramadan programmes and events at the mosque. The Center has put up 12 comfortable, fully equipped, air-conditioned tents to receive 27,000 fasting people throughout the holy month. Iftar meals are distributed to those fasting in collaboration with the Armed Forces Officers’ Club in Abu Dhabi.


The Center also provides e-vehicles to facilitate the movement of elderly people, families and people with special needs from the car parking area surrounding the mosque to the prayer halls. It has also arranged 3,000 special medical chairs for worshippers with special needs.

Yousif Al Obaidli, Director-General of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center, said, “We are striving to use our partnerships to implement the Year of Giving activities during the month of fasting.” He noted that the satisfaction rate among worshippers and fasting people reached 96 percent last year when the mosque welcomed over 24,000 people.

Besides, the Center organises daily religious lectures after the Taraweeh prayers by a number of imminent scholars and figures, who are His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed’s guests.

The “Iftar Cannon” is yet another activity that is held in collaboration with the Armed Forces’ support units throughout the holy month. This activity receives wide attention from the local community as it is a part of its cultural heritage.
