DUBAI 3 April 2019: The Federal Traffic Council in the UAE discussed traffic safety indexes one of which included the installation of control devices in vehicles that ignore stop signs on school buses.

Ministry of Interior and Emirates Transport representatives were part of the discussion. The meeting was chaired by Major-General Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations Affairs of Dubai Police and head of the Federal Traffic Council.

Al Zafeen praised the efforts of the Traffic and Patrols Administration and all relevant traffic authorities to reduce the number of accidents and maintain road security while urging them to double their related efforts and achieve the target death rate of 3.60 per 100,000 people in 2019, said Wam. It did not mention what the current rate is.

Traffic Awareness: Al Zafeen highlighted the key role of traffic awareness in ensuring road safety, protecting the lives of roads users, and achieving the strategic goals of national traffic and patrols administrations to reduce the rate of traffic accidents and resulting deaths.

Ramadan Traffic: The council also viewed a presentation by the Al Ihsan Charity Association in Dubai about the “Ramadan Aman Campaign,” which aims to reduce the number of traffic accidents during the Holy Month of Ramadan and provide meals to drivers, as well as to distribute advice, guidance and awareness flyers. The council agreed to sign a related Memorandum of Understanding with the association.

Happiness Patrols: The council agreed to unify a nation-wide programme, titled, “We Are All Police,” and address the Police Leadership Council about this matter. It also agreed to generalise the “Traffic Happiness Patrols” in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and other emirates, to encourage positive behaviour and commitment to traffic laws.
