GENEVA 19 October 2018: The UAE’s Federal National Council (FNC) has called for ensuring protection of migrants’ rights and regulating immigration aground the world while laying special focus on the rights of migrating children, and people with special difficulties.
The FNC representatives underscored the importance of identifying additional significant reasons behind migration, such as sexual violence, marginalisation, climate change and natural disasters.
The call was made during the FNC Parliamentary Section’s participation in the meeting of the Third Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights of the Inter-Parliamentary Union 139th Assembly, taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 14th -18th, 2018, said Wam.
It stressed the importance of reinforcing the efforts addressing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development goals of ending poverty and hunger as well as caring for the rights of people with special difficulties.
Joint Standards to Protect Migrants
The Emirati Parliamentary Division delegation stressed the importance of developing joint standards for the protection of migrants, governing migration and considering gender, children and people with disabilities through all phases of migration, during its participation in the meeting of the Third Permanent Committee of Democracy and Human Rights as part of the meetings at the 139th IPU session held in Geneva.
Faisal Hareb Al Thabahy, Parliamentary Division Representative, stated during the committee’s discussion on the resolution on ”Strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation on migration and migration governance in view of the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration” that there was a need to consider adopting the world charter for a safe and organised migration and urged parliaments to make sure that the decision of sovereign nations on migration policies and legislation, including bilateral and regional agreements, should comply with their international human rights obligations, while preserving the countries rights to set their priorities in terms of implementing these obligations according to their conditions and needs.
He also urged parliamentarians to exert efforts to document their experiences in migration to avoid stereotypes and to promote social integration and cohesion, while implementing strict procedures against terrorism and racism and other forms of discrimination by foreigners, and to promote the respect for diversity and pluralism, tolerance and peaceful co-existence.
Al Thabahy made the suggestions on behalf of the Emirati Parliamentary Division and its amendments and comments on the draft resolution of the Permanent Committee for Democracy and Human Rights titled “Promoting the International Parliamentary Cooperation in Migration and its Governance by Considering the Adoption of the World Charter for a Safe and Organised Migration”.
The UAE believes in the importance of co-existence, peace and equality between all peoples as it has adopted this policy since it was established, the division stated.
