Which Mideast city is the cheapest in the world?

By Eudore R. Chand

DUBAI 18 March 2018: One would have thought of Sub-Sahara or Asia – but it is a city in the Middle East has has earned the distinction of being the cheapest in the world – Damascus.

At the other end of the scale, it is not a city in the First World that is the most expensive – but a city in Asia – Singapore – that has been ranked the most expensive in the world by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

As Damascus shows, a growing number of locations are becoming cheaper because of the impact of political or economic disruption. Although the Indian Subcontinent remains structurally cheap, instability is becoming an increasingly prominent factor in lowering the relative cost of living of a location, said EIU.

Put simply, cheaper cities also tend to be less liveable, it added.

A 1kg loaf of bread in Damascus cost US$0.60 – and the same in Singapore cost $3.71.

Below is the list of most expensive cities in the world.
