The owner of a construction company in the Algerian capital, Algiers, beat up his wife severely, using a stick and an electric wire, because of her ‘addiction’ to Facebook.
The angry husband broke the hand of his wife, causing her inability to work for more than 40 days, according to medical testimony.
He was arrested and held in temporary custody in the El Harrach jail, on charges of assault and battery.
An Nahar newspaper quoted the accused during the trial as saying that he is rich and gives to his wife dearly, but she “did not appreciate the marital relationship and become a phone and Facebook addict.”
The victim said that her husband was able to resort to several legal ways and means than beating. She requested the court to appoint a medical expert for examination to determine damages.
The public prosecutor asked for the imprisonment of the pair for two years and a fine of 100 thousand dinars.
