SWS shooters reign supreme in Ramadan tourney

SHARJAH 13 May 2019: Sharjah Women’s Sports Club’s shooters were crowned champions of the shooting competition on May 11 (Saturday) after they secured the first three places in the 10m air pistol shooting contests (individual), held as part of the ongoing 11th Ramadan Women’s Sports Tournament.

The SWSC’s shooters reigned supreme at RWST’s 10m air pistol finals (individual), with shooting expert Wafa Khamis bagging the contest gold with an awe-inspiring score of 571 points, followed by her peer Safa Mohammed Al Hashimi who claimed the silver with 550 points. Ghaya Shohail Al Shuhail snatched the bronze medal with 534 points.

10m air rifle shooting: In the 10m air rifle individual shooting, the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club (SWSC) claimed the first three places with Suhaila Al Bloushi winning the gold with 590 points, while her colleague Marwa Jawhar Mahboub secured the silver medal with 587.5 points. Sheikha Mohammed Al Shehhi of the Sharjah Police bagged the bronze with 584.3 points.

Group contests: In the 10m air rifle team shooting (group), Al Dhaid Cultural and Sports Club clinched the gold, while Al Dhaid City Club secured the silver medal and Sharjah Women’s Sports Club the bronze.

In the 10m air pistol team shooting (group), Al Dhaid Cultural and Sports Club again won the gold medal, while Sharjah Women’s Sports Club secured the silver and bronze medals.

Nada Askar Al Naqbi, Director General of SWS, presented the medals to the winners in the presence of Major General Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police; Brigadier Abdul Malek Jani, Director of the National Olympic Academy; Salem Bin Huwaiden, Chairman of Al Dhaid Cultural and Sports Club; and Abdullah Yaqoub, Secretary General of the UAE Shooting and Archery Federation.

Volleyball Matches

The volleyball competitions witnessed fierce competition in the matches between Sharjah Women’s Sports Club and Italian Espera Moonves, and Elite Volleyball Academy Ladies and Wildcats. Espera team snatched a tough win from SWSC 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-14), while Elite team easily defeated Wildcats in straight sets 3-0 (25-3, 25-16, 23-25).

The volleyball finals will be held today (Sunday) with Espera and Elite competing for the first and second place, while Sharjah Women’s Sports Club will meet Wildcats in the matches for the third and fourth places. The winning teams will be honoured on the closing day of the tournament on May 14.

Olympic champion: Abdullah bin Yaqoub, Secretary General of the UAE Shooting and Archery Federation, lauded SWS’s efforts in organising shooting championships that helped the national as well as amateur teams. He noted that organising such championships aligned with the federation’s vision that aims to encourage talents through pioneering projects like the Olympic Champion.

Team support: Hassan Mohsen Hassan, Shooting Coach at the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club, said the Ramadan Tournament was a good training ground for the national shooting team, which included many players from the Sharjah Women’s Sports. “Our team is the biggest beneficiary of this tournament and I really thank SWS for providing this opportunity to its players to compete in such a professional tournament.” he added.
